Change is in the air!

The WBC program is a public-private partnership with the Small Business Administration that leverages grants to operate more than 150 centers nationwide. These centers offer robust and tailored services to their population - from basic accounting to assistance applying for patents and winning government contracts.

The WBC program has an enormous footprint of successful business owners and job creators. In fiscal year 2016, WBC’s reached more than 145,000 clients, conducting trainings in more than 35 languages. This translated to more than 17,000 new businesses, 23,000 new jobs, nearly $700 million in new revenues, and $429 million in private capital infusion. As taxpayers, we are proud of WBCs' astounding return on investment. Every federal dollar invested in the WBC program returns $46 to the economy.

As a Vice President of the AWBC, I am looking forward to hosting the National AWBC Conference this September in Tampa where more than 350 WBC Directors and business supporters from around the nation will gather to talk about strategies for helping female entrepreneurs.

We are also excited to have one of the nation’s leading entrepreneurs – HSN’s Joy Mangano – as the recipient of this year’s Helen Gordon Davis Women Leadership Award at our annual Waves of Change Luncheon March 21 at the new Armature Works.

In order to continue this impressive growth, women entrepreneurs need the continued support of policymakers willing to foster an entrepreneurial environment that allows women to achieve their full economic potential. Specifically, we urge Members of Congress to fund the WBC program at $18 million for FY2019 and pass key modernizations to the program advanced by the House and Senate Committee.

Five out of every six new businesses will be started by a woman. Ensuring they succeed is the Congressional mandate of the WBC program, and we intend to fulfill it. We hope Congress will join us.
