HELEN GORDON DAVIS, GLORIA STEINEM, SHEILA JOHNSON, AND JOY MANGANO
Our founder was an iconic champion for women and civil rights. The late Helen Gordon Davis was the first woman from Hillsborough County elected to the Florida House of Representatives; she opened doors for women and minorities, confronting inequalities with poise and determination. Mrs. Davis, a fearless legislator, was revered by many in the Tampa Bay area. In 1952, she was the first white woman in Florida to join the NAACP at a time of civil unrest in the South. She established the Centre for Women as “The Women’s Survival Centre” to help women become financially independent. Her vision and foresight has made it possible for The Centre for Women to help more than 80,000 individuals to lead more successful and fulfilling lives.
Suze is an American financial icon for both women and men. She is an American author, financial advisor, motivational speaker and television host.
She graduated with a social work degree and moved to California, where at the age of 29, she was waitressing and earning $400 a month. She borrowed $52,000 from friends and investors to open a restaurant and she invested this money with a financial advisor. After the financial advisor lost her investment, Suze decided to train as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. In 1983, she became Vice President of Retail Customer Investments at Prudential Bache Securities, and just four years later she founded the Suze Orman Financial Group. In 2002, she hosted her own financial program The Suze Orman Show on CNBC. In 2006, she won her first of eight Gracie Awards, which recognizes the nation’s best radio, television and cable programming for, by and about women. She is a two-time Emmy Award television host, and in January 2012, Orman's six-episode TV series America's Money Class with Suze Orman premiered on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
She has written numerous personal finance books including her most recently released #1 New York Times bestseller Women & Money.
