HELEN GORDON DAVIS, GLORIA STEINEM, AND SHEILA JOHNSON

Our founder was an iconic champion for women and civil rights. The late Helen Gordon Davis was the first woman from Hillsborough County elected to the Florida House of Representatives; she opened doors for women and minorities, confronting inequalities with poise and determination. Mrs. Davis, a fearless legislator, was revered by many in the Tampa Bay area. In 1952, she was the first white woman in Florida to join the NAACP at a time of civil unrest in the South.  She established the Centre for Women as “The Women’s Survival Centre” to help women become financially independent.  Her vision and foresight has made it possible for The Centre for Women to help more than 80,000 individuals to lead more successful and fulfilling lives.

joy-movie-poster-e1451702072963It’s a model rags-to-riches story. Her rise from struggling single mother of three to the nation’s most celebrated female inventor is truly what dreams are made of. Joy Mangano, self-made millionaire, entrepreneur, inventor of the Miracle Mop, and inspiration behind the acclaimed film Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence, will receive The Helen Gordon Davis Women’s Leadership Award at the third annual Waves of Change luncheon on March 21, 2018.

Joy began inventing at an early age but in 1990, after growing frustrated with ordinary mops, Mangano developed her first big succ
inventingjoy-book-coveress-- the Miracle Mop. After selling the mop at trade shows and in local stores on Long Island, Joy eventually made it to QVC where she sold 1,000 units on consignment. Initially its sales were modest, but once QVC allowed Mangano to go on-air and sell it herself, 18,000 mops were sold in less than half an hour. By the year 2000, her company was selling $10 million worth of Miracle Mops per year and today Mangano holds more than 100 patents for her inventions. Now, Joy regularly appears on HSN and is considered to be HSN’s most successful purveyor and with good reason-- her hourly sales regularly top $1 million and she does more than $150 million in sales annually.

Joy has lead an incredible life and has proven herself as a fearless woman and business force, the incredulity of which was shared with the world in 2015. A biopic of Joy’s journey was developed starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano-- a role which justifiably won Jennifer Lawrence the Oscar-- and as if that were not impressive enough, in November 2017 she released her book Inventing Joy: Dare to Build a Brave & Creative Life where she relives her incredible and inspiring journey to joy.
